Speeches and Essays
The essay below started as a speech to a group of women who belong to my church entitled “Wholesome Literature: The Intelligent Choice.” I rewrote it to be suitable for a general religious audience. The new version has terrific quotations from the late great authors Isaac Asimov and Olive Ann Burns.
I’ve given many literary presentations to the women in my church over the years. Included are those that best detail my literary philosophy. The first two essays were part of a series of spotlights and mini-classes I gave between March 1996 and May 1997.
I adapted this final essay from a mini-class I gave in March 2002.
Both “Intelligence and the Art of Homemaking” and “Delicious Literature to Nourish the Soul” refer to the chart below:
The Power of the Word (LDS)
“Choosing to stay home with your children doesn’t mean stopping your own progress.”
This article was published in the LDS magazine the Ensign in March 2005, and while it does contain LDS language, the topic is universal and may be of interest to others.
