I compiled this list in 1998 to provide titles of books that limit foul language and do not contain immoral themes, pornography, or excessive violence. The contributors made the decisions on what books meet the criteria. In classifying the titles below, I used the information given to me by the contributors. Where that information was lacking, I went to a variety of sources, listed in the bibliography.

Most of the books on this list will be of interest to a general audience. The list was prepared by women belonging to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for other women in their congregation, and some of the titles—which are noted as “Latter-day Saint”—are written from that perspective. If a book on the fiction list was published by an evangelical Christian publisher or has strong Christian themes, I labeled it “Christian.”

At least four of the contributors regularly read books aloud to their children while they were raising them. I’ve noted some of their favorite authors for this purpose at the end of the non-fiction list.

Contributors: Barbara, Gertrude, Jackie, Marilyn, Naomi, Carole, Amy, Christina, Kathy, Rachel, Valerie, Judy, Linda, Janice
